    puta (Spanish)

    Etymology

Uncertain. Could have been a short form of prostituta. Possibly related to Italian puttana (Old Spanish: putaña; see putañear), which ultimately derives from - es putus, meaning “pure”. María Moliner dictionary (also Joan Coromines) states the most probable origin: from Vulgar Latin putta, from superlative puttus from putus, boy (note that this word appears in all romance languages).
